Unusual sample clearing sitch

So I just dug up these casette recordings of a family member playing some pieces on the piano. We have a Gershwin song and a Aaron Copeland song. The question is, can I use these? The tunes are under copyright, but the performance was a student performance in the '80s (not that the year matters). Any ideas on who owns the rights to these recordings?
