Seperating a guitar line from vocals

I know this question has probably been asked a lot, but I was wondering is there a way to seperate a guitar melody from a vocal.
I'm trying to use the FFT to filter out the vocals, but still having no luck. Feels like the vocal's frequency is near same as the guitar... can anyone help me out or point me to articles on filtering in hip hop sampling? Thanks!
